Wal-Mart® lowers prices, but some quality Palm Treo OS® software developers are giving a whole new meaning to PDA software pricing by offering freeware.

Some Palm Treo OS software developers are giving a whole new meaning to saving money by switching all their Palm Treo OS games and utilities to freeware. Jennifer Chappell’s article, titled: “Another Palm OS Developer Giving Away Software: a Developing Trend?” spread the news on May 2nd, 2008 at www.treocentral.com. Reports from Palm OS® users as recently as July 5th, 2008, show many Palm Treo freeware choices still available for the taking.

Get it While it's Hot

This is a great opportunity for quick acting Palm Treo® users, as well as users of other Palm OS® devices, like Sony Clie®, Palm Pilot®, and Palm Centro®. Some of the free games have high quality graphics, and the cost savings is phenomenal! If ten freeware choices were originally priced at $9.95 each, that’s $99.50 worth of entertainment for free!

According to Jennifer Chappell, most of the freeware are games. She added her voice to the many who sing the praises of PDAmill Game Studio, the software developer that began offering discontinued, quality Palm OS games as freeware. However, it’s not all just fun and games. A search of Ellams Software® website shows they offer several freeware utilities, like tipping software and a lottery checker. Palm Powerups changed their SkinUI v2.0.0.0 program to freeware in April of 2008.

Rumors Flying Among the Palm Savvy

Many loyal Palm users are wringing their hands over the future of the Palm OS software availability.

  • Are the companies getting out of the Palm OS® business?
  • Are they moving toward only Windows Mobile® and Blackberry® platforms?
  • What sort of quality is a free game or utility?

While some PDA users hesitate and fret, others joyfully snatch up free games and utilities.

Nothing to Lose and Everything to Gain

If they accomplish nothing else, these Palm OS software companies are creating great public relations. The PDA freeware extravaganza may play-out as a winning opportunity to broaden their customer base. PDA users are trying a variety of programs they might not have without the freeware nod. Freeware users are impressed with the quality of workmanship in some of the mobile program graphics.

When it’s time to upgrade and replace Palm Treo® systems, these customers will be of great potential for repeat business. Based on the excellent performance they enjoy now with the Palm OS® freeware still available, they are more likely to be paying customers for future mobile software offered by Palm Treo developers.

Prices cannot fall any lower than free. There is no reason to delay downloading Palm Treo® freeware for a Palm OS®, Sony Clie®, Palm Pilot®, Palm Centro®, or other compatible mobile device.

The Palm software business is here to stay, regardless of what form it takes. In the meantime, mobile users are wise to check into the limited PDA freeware still available. Get it while it’s hot!
